Appointment of Mark Brennan sends strong signals of support to Small Business in Australia

Australia’s peak body for small business has welcomed the appointment of Mark Brennan as the inaugural Federal Small Business Commissioner and believes the decision will boost confidence in the small business sector, says Business Enterprise Centres Australia (BECA) chairman Jack Hughes.

“Federal small business minister Brendan O’Connor has made another good decision in choosing Mr Brennan because he is a balanced and experienced candidate, with a proven track record of dealing with and understanding small business issues,” says Jack Hughes.

“The process of establishing this new role will involve navigating uncharted waters and we have every confidence that with Mr Brennan at the helm, the journey towards a fully functioning Office of the Small Business Commissioner will live up to expectations.

“We applaud Minister O’Connor’s public statement that he wants the Federal Small Business Commissioner to speak out on issues on behalf the small business community. This is a sign of a government and minister committed to truly engaging with the sector.

“On behalf of the 95 Business Enterprise Centres Australia wide and the hundreds of thousands of small business operators we work with, we welcome Mr Brennan into his role and look forward to working with him.

“A further cause for optimism within the sector is that the appointment of the commissioner suggests funds allocated in the May budget for the office appear to have come through the Economic Review Committee process unscathed giving hope earlier promises of funding the Small Business Advisory Service have made it through too.

“As the Gillard government understands, time is of the essence for announcing the funding and preserving the experience and expertise of advisors and support people who provide frontline support to Australia’s small business operators – the engine room that powers our nation’s economy.

“Applications for SBAS funding closed some three months ago now and we are looking forward to a positive announcement from the Minister on this,” he says.
